Evaluation of compressive strength for paper sludge brick
Abstract
This study was to investigate the suitability of waste paper produced from paper mill used
to make bricks and sand mixed with cement. Physical characteristics and chemical products
such as specific gravity and absorption of water from paper sludge review. The mixture of
cement and sand with different content of paper sludge will be prepared and compressive
strength, water absorption and density of the brick was tested by making comparisons
between the control brick and brick from the mixed paper sludge (20%, 30%, 40% and
50%) used. Based on these findings, the percentage of paper waste suitable content is less
than 20%. This is because only 20% use of waste paper to achieve results that meet
Standard Specification for Building Works 2005 (JKR) which is 5.601 MPa in a period of
28 days. Strength decrease associated with water absorption of bricks and the contents of
paper sludge used. Based on the study, the increasing of paper sludge content as a mixture
of brick causes the brick water absorption is higher and this resulted effect compressive
strength become lower.
