This project conducted to study the effect of compaction of Co-HA on mechanical properties. Cobalt is actively involved in the metabolic process of body such as it promotes the growth of bone tissues and increases the activity of white blood cells. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is well known biomaterial and also is the mineral component of natural human bone and teeth. HA reveals excellent chemical and biological affinity with bony tissues. On this project, the test is carried out on pure HA sample and mixing Co-HA samples on difference composition. The samples fabricated by powder metallurgy method where electroless deposition is used to produces to Co-HA samples. Four differences compaction pressure (30, 40, 50 and 60 kPa) and percent of composition is a main parameter for this study. Hardness and toughness of the samples were analysed by using Vickers Hardness Tester and Three Points Bending. The phase of the samples also characterized by using X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Based on the result, 60 kPa pressure compaction shows high hardness and toughness compared to other compaction. The hardness and toughness was increase proportional with increasing in pressure compaction. Meanwhile in term of composition, 2% Co-HA was the best composition due to a lot of improvement in term of mechanical properties than its pure material. By referring the XRD data analysis, the present of cobalt was increase with increasing the composition of cobalt addition on to hydroxyapatite. As conclusion, the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite can be improve by increase the pressure compaction and addition the right amount of cobalt.en_US
