Transformer derating with half-wave rectifier load
Abstract
The deviation of the voltage and current waveform from sinusoidal is described in terms of the waveform distortion often expressed as harmonic distortion. The increasing use of nonlinear loads in industry is keeping harmonic distortion in distribution networks on the rise. This final project presents the effect of harmonic distortion on loaded single phase 2
winding transformer. The impact of K-factor is studied by implementing DC unbalanced
configurations. The measurements are done online from the primary side. For comparative
needs, the resistor load, half-wave rectifier with resistor and DC motor were tested on. This project presents the analyzed and compared result of harmonic content, K-factor of derating transformer and power consumption. By using Schaffner Equipment, harmonic load that placed on transformer can be measured and the appropriate transformer needs can be
determined.
