Health problems and environmental pollutions are often related to inadequate landfill leachate treatment. Proper collection, treatment and disposal of leachate are necessary to promote better environment and healthful condition. Therefore, the use of constructed wetlands has considerable promise for the control of a large number of landfill leachate problems. In this study, a combination system utilizing a SSF wetland followed by a FWS wetland were studied to treat landfill leachate and by incorporating local component and expertise. The performance of SSF-FWS constructed wetland was evaluated with comparison to a Control system (unplanted). The result demonstrated that a combination system utilizing a SSF-FWS constructed wetland systems have shown higher performance in treating leachate landfill. The result demonstrated that the removal efficiency of pollutants in leachate using L.flava and E.crassipes in SSF-FWS constructed wetlands were SS (87.3%), NH4-N (93.1%), PO3-4 (95.9%) and Fe (99.5%). This study concludes that SSF-FWS constructed wetlands were increased the performance of pollutants removal and thus, enhances leachate water quality.
