Effectiveness of Industrialised Building System (IBS) by using Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) – a case study of project private finance initiative 2 (PFI2), student hostels for 4000 students at Pauh Putra, Main Campus Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP)
Abstract
The development of Industrialised Building System (IBS) is not new in the
construction industry. IBS by using Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is one of the
innovative systems classified in Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB),
2010. It is a new system implemented which is the project of Private Finance Initiative
2 (PFI2) is the first government project to implement this system in Malaysia. This
system replaces the traditional brick laying and form work construction method. This
study is done to identify the building structural elements of IBS by using EPS used in
project of student hostel in Pauh Putra Main Campus UniMAP, identify the process
involved in the construction of the project by using EPS and finally to study the
effectiveness of IBS using EPS panels for building structural elements involved, which
are the cost estimation, rapid completion period, the use of minimal labor and perfect
quality control. The methods adopted for this study included interview and site visit to
the site office of project of PFI2. Based on the information gained, the most effective
system is identified by comparing the IBS and conventional construction method.
