dc.description.abstractIn this paper the effect of the vertical component of ground motion on the response of reinforced concrete frame is investigated and their performances of the analyses are expressed in term of interstorey drift ratio and axial variation. The present work assesses the earthquake response of four reinforced concrete planar frames which subjected to ten single ground motions with vertical component analysed by nonlinear time history analysis using RUAUMOKO. Two families of regular and vertically irregular (transfer beam) frames are examined. The first family has been designed for earthquake and gravity loads according to European codes while the second family has been designed only for gravity loads. The results obtained indicate that vertical component of ground motions do not affect significantly the interstorey drift ratio but generate high fluctuations of axial forces in the columns especially the inner columns and this confirmed it could have detrimental effects on the damage of RC structures for both families of regular and vertically irregular frames.en_US
