Abstract
Excessive generation of solid waste resulting from the activities of the rapid development will be an important issue that cannot be avoided in time to come in countries that are being built. At that time, this issue cannot be ignored anymore. Before the issue turned into a complicated problem, the measures should be taken quickly, and one of the measures necessary and have done is to recycle waste. In 1993, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has launched a recycling program. But what is sad is not successful program to achieve goals. On 2 December 2000, once again KPKT launched a similar program. Although the recycling program is recommended to achieve an increase of one percent, but this practice is not a common practice done by the citizens of Malaysia to manage solid waste per day. A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and awareness of recycling, the level of their involvement in recycling activities and the factors influencing their decision to recycle among the people of Malaysia, especially in the study area, Alor Star and Kangar. The collection of data for analysis was done through interviews and questionnaires distribution involving 120 respondents for each study area. Results showed that the number of operations carried out by the government is not able to generate a satisfactory response from the public. Recycling awareness campaign is also not able to motivate the public to take measures to recycle effectively.
