Properties of sustainable concrete with substitution of recycled coarse aggregate
Abstract
Industrial fields are developing rapidly nowadays. However, continuous of industrial development poses serious problems of construction and demolition waste disposal. Whereas shortage of natural aggregate for production of new concrete in critical stage. Therefore, this research was carried out to produce a new concrete by using recycle aggregates obtained from construction and demolition. The effect on the workability, density and compressive strength were determined. The mixes were prepared with recycled aggregate – coarse aggregate of 20 %, 60% and 100% and the mix design was done based on British Standard Institute method. Workability of the recycled concrete is increase with the increase of the recycled aggregate in the concrete mixture. The results from the density test demonstrated that the increase of recycled aggregate content in concrete cube will decrease the density value. Under compression test result shows that increase of recycled aggregate with substitution of 20%, 60% and 100% will increase the compression strength after 7 days which is 28.2 MPa, 23.1 MPa and 26.5 MPa, respectively. After 28 days, the compression decrease to 24.9 MPa, 21.9 MPa and 23.5 MPa, respectively. In other word, increase of strength is only up to certain recycled aggregate content.
