Abstract: EC 2 standard and EC 8 standard as a parameter in determined the characteristic of fundamental period. From the research, the analyses were conducted based on the physical properties, and strength properties. The research is done in order to compare the properties of the building structure design under EC 2 standard and under EC 8 standard in determined the characteristic of fundamental period. Three types of frame were chosen. The frames were label as Regular Frame, Irregular Frame with Transfer Beam, and Irregular Frame with Setback. To achieve the research, all the analysis will be conducted either design by manual calculation or computer added design (CAD). SAP 2000 were used for the whole process of analysis during the research been conducted. As a result, either less physical properties in term of size, area, and amount of the reinforcement bars or less strength properties such as of yield, displacement, tensile resistance, inelastic behavior and stiffness based on structure design under EC 2 standard, produced the higher value of fundamental period from structure design under EC 8 standard. In terms of load distribution, the bigger value for bending moments of structure resulting the higher value of fundamental period. As an additional conclusion, the lesser value of the fundamental period value, the more safe for the occupants. Besides that, the cost of constructing the building was high based on the physical properties. Refer to this statement, structure design under EC 8 standards were not practical to construct in Malaysia.
