Abstract: The main objective of this study to investigate the effects of non-halogen flame retardant in high density polyethylene (HDPE) and observe their ignition properties. High density polyethylene (HDPE) was prepared with added non-halogen flame retardant and synergist in powder. HDPE with different recipe were mixed using Z-blade mixer in temperature 200°C and value of motor torque was 50 rpm. Synergist was added to improve miscibility of HDPE with antimony trioxide as a non-halogen flame retardant. However, the result from HDPE with different composition of non-halogen flame retardant and synergist almost same. The result from thermal analysis show non-halogen flame retardant and synergist has a higher melting temperature than HDPE. In combustion process non-halogen flame retardant did not produce a “char” and it did not dripping when burning. The flammability of blends determined by direct flame method because it approaching the UL 94. Overall, the studies showed that non-halogen flame retardant have a potential to develop in plastic industry because it is not harmful for environment.
