To supply clean water to hilly rural area (palm oil estate) at Felda Tawai, Gerik Perak about 8 km from existing water sources
Abstract
As everybody knows water is essential for life of human, plants and animals. Providing a better water supply can significantly improve the quality of life and is a source of, and the condition for, a socio-economic development. However when there is a water shortage, there is a serious problem. The main reason for this problem is the growing population in the region. This means there are more demands on the water supply. The main objective of this project is to supply public water from the main source to hilly rural area of palm oil estate at Gerik, Perak because shortage of water due to increase in population and housing. To achieve the objectives, need identify the best and suitable location to put the pump, identify the horsepower need to use to increase the water pressure and identify the accurate size of elevated tank to ensure the water is enough based on water demand calculation.
There are several alternatives to achieve the objective which is Option 1, Option 1, Option 3 and Option 4. Each option was evaluated and calculated based on of flow rate, velocity, total head loss, pressure, different of high and required power of pump to get the best of option. According to the option, Option 4 is the best option. It is because, water is supply from source with the existing pressure is sufficient until Location 2A. After that from Location 2A using the pumping system to delivery water to suction tank at Location 3. Then using the gravity flow to delivery water to elevated tank at Location 4. After thatusing the water demand to design suction tank and elevated tank size. The size of suction tank is 3 m x 4 m x 9 m while elevated size is 3 m x 9 m x 9 m. The type of elevated tank is elevated reinforced concrete rectangular tank. After that, design the pumping system, the pump selected was 10 hp centrifugal pump. Option 4 is the best option and this project achieved the objectives because water is sufficiently received by the Location 4 from the Location 1.
