Water quality assessments and the relationship with the land use activity in Terusan Utara river
Abstract
This paper report result of a study conducted to determine the water quality of Terusan Utara river based on physical and chemical parameter and to relate the water quality parameter with the land use activity. There are five station flagged along the river function as water intake location. The intake station located at Pelubang, Jitra, Tunjang, Padang Sera, and Arau. The parameter that will be analysed is suspended solid, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, turbidity, ammonia nitrogen, manganese, ferrous, phosphate and nitrate. After the sample of water is taken, laboratory test conducted based on the parameter above. The result of water quality made by using Water Quality Index method and Interim National Water Quality Standard method. The result of water quality analysis found in station one has a water quality in class III. Station two until station five is in class IV.. This means that the rate of pollution of Terusan Utara river is high. After the water quality rate has been determined, a study about land use activity relation was investigated by visiting site location along the river. After the relationship of water quality parameter and land use activity is done, one figure was produced by using GIS software in order to indicate the rate of pollution and the relation with land use activity.
