Growth kinetic and morphology evaluation of Grey Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus pulmonarius) spawn after freeze-drying
Abstract
In this study, an investigation was conducted to observe the growth kinetic of grey oyster mushroom spawn after freeze-drying. The comparison of mycelium growth between freeze-dried spawn and freeze spawn were made where freeze-dried spawn showed higher specific growth rate and shorter doubling time which 0.2794 and 2.4808 respectively compared to freeze spawn which only gave lower specific growth rate, 0.2422 and longer doubling time, 2.8619. Besides, the weight of spawn and rehydration time also play important role in the growth of mycelium on the petri dish. For weight of spawn range, the highest specific growth rate is achieved when used 0.35 g of spawn to culture as the value is 0.2602. Thus, 0.30 g spawn has the shortest doubling time which is 2.6639 compared to the other ranges. Meanwhile, for rehydration time, the optimum time to soak the spawn in order to achieve highest specific growth rate and shortest doubling time is at 30 minutes. The specific growth rate and doubling time of 30 minutes are 0.3195 and 2.1695 respectively. For morphology evaluation, a comparison of fruit body analysis between commercial and freeze-dried spawn were made and it resulted that freeze-dried spawn gave off higher production of fruit body and wet weight of fruit body compared to commercial spawn.
