A study on the production of Hydroxyapatite via sol-gel route
Abstract
In this current work, Hydroxyapatite was prepared through sol-gel technique under wet chemical synthesis technique. Hydroxyapatite is a chemical compound that inherits good biocompability and bioactivity due to its resemblance with bone’s structural and chemical characteristics. The main component of Hydroxyapatite is made up from phosphorus and calcium precursor up to 70 %-80 %. The sol-gel technique consists of; 1) chemical dissolution 2) precursors mixing 3) sol aging 4) drying and 5) powder treatment. The comparison of produced Hydroxyapatite with commercialized Hydroxyapatite was done with Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The optimum conditions that were selected for production of Hydroxyapatite were 950 rpm, 600 ᵒC and 3 days. Although the size of commercialized Hydroxyapatite is in nm, the result best obtained was 8.96 μm.
