Study on performance of coconut coir fiber, rice husk and sawdust as noise abatement materials
Abstract
Noise can cause a few types of effect to human health, especially in hearing like hearing loss. Indoor noise pollution comes from many sources and places. The research focus on the sound reduction wall surface material precisely the organic material such as
coconut coir fiber, rice husk and sawdust. This sound reduction material is suitable to be applied as interior lining for homes, offices and so on. Furthermore, the efficiency of coconut coir fiber, rice husk and sawdust as indoor noise reduction were compared in order to evaluate the effectiveness indoor noise level by using noise abatement material. In preparation of board, two binders were used which is polyester resin and hardening catalyst, cement and sand. For board using binder of polyester resin and hardening catalyst, the mixture of polyester resin, hardening catalyst with raw materials was mixed uniformly and the board will produced. Then, the ratio of raw materials, cement and sand is 2:1:1. The Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) was determined and the highest value inferred as the best noise reducer. The parameters used to determine the NRC are
the frequency, speaker intensity and the distance from the speaker. The results shown rice husk is better to binder cement and sand which is 0.12 of average of NRC, while for polyester resin and hardening catalyst binder, sawdust is the best which is 0.17 of NRC. Based on the first objective, the efficiency indoor noise reductions are according to the binder using on it which is polyester resin and hardening catalyst, Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and sand. For objective two the noise level able to reduced substantially at a distance of 250 cm from the speaker. Objective three, the polyester resin and hardening catalyst as the best binder compared to cement and sand because the completion method is easier and faster part can reduce the noise level even more.
