Iron based alloys containing chromium as a major constituent with nickel additions are the most prominent materials in coal fired generating units and petroleum refinery plants. The corrosion of these alloys under service conditions is not uncommon due to deposition of molten salt(s) or ash and/or the attck of gaseous species such as O2, CO2, CO, SO2, H2S etc.
