Isolation of solvent producing strain from palm oil sludge pond for Biobutanol production
Abstract
This study was carried out to obtain the amount of the biobutanol produced by the
isolated strain from the analysis of biobutanol production. The isolated strain was based on the microscopic characterization where the solvent producing strain is Clostridium sp. The isolated biobutanol producing strain was able to produce solvent and gas. The
samples from fermentation were taken within a specific period to analyze the growth of
cells, pH of fermentation broth, sugar, and biobutanol production. The fermentation was
performed under anaerobic conditions at 30°C for eight days. The study shows that the
increasing of growth cells and biobutanol production while decreasing of medium pH
and sugar concentration. After that, the experimental result shows that the biobutanol
production was 0.02 g/L for 166-hour fermentation. The isolated strain in the Tryptone-
Yeast extract-Acetate (TYA) liquid medium has directly consumed the sugar in the
fermentation process. Thus, no pre-treatment process was involved in the experiment. In
conclusion, the isolated strain from the experiment has produced the low amount of
biobutanol.
