The effect of pyrolysis parameters on sugarcane bagasse
Abstract
Nowadays, the fossil fuel is depleting and people are finding alternative to replace
fossil fuels that are non-renewable resources. Fossil fuel is the main transportation oil that is used worldwide. The objectives of this research were to investigate the effect of pyrolysis parameters on the products yield and to evaluate the property of sugarcane
bagasse bio-oil product. Biomass is renewable resource and has continuous availability of it. Pyrolysis parameters such as pyrolysis temperature, holding time, heating rate, sweep gas velocity, sample size influence greatly the pyrolysis product yields. The maximumbio-oil yield was 32.35 % at temperature of 450 °C, heating rate of 50 °C/min, sweep gas
velocity of 50 ml/min, and holding time of 4 minutes with 600 μm sample size. The
maximum bio-char yield was 47.42 % at temperature of 400 °C, sweep gas velocity of 50
ml/min, heating rate of 50 °C/min, holding time of 4 minutes with 600 μm sample size.
The maximum gas yield was 67.73 % at temperature of 500 °C, sweep gas velocity of 50
ml/min, heating rate of 50 °C/min, holding time of 7 minutes with 600 μm sample size.
The bio-oil and bio-char produced from pyrolysis can be upgraded to higher quality to
become industrial fuel and activated carbon respectively.
