Developing an environmental monitoring system (EMS) and environmental monitoring plan (EMP) in the establishment of landfill post-closure procedure
Abstract
The main objective of this study is to establish an effective general system for monitoring pollutants by taking into consideration the characteristic of the waste and the landfill critical structures. The other objective of this study is to observe the efficiency of Environmental Monitoring System (EMS) that has been establish for the selected landfill site. The findings are essential to determine and analyze the important and critical components that should be considered in the establishing of Environmental Monitoring Plan (EMP) for the landfill site chosen. This study took place at Kuala Perlis landfill which has been closed and Padang Siding landfill which is still be used to accept the municipal solid waste around Perlis. The chemical parameters tested on the leachate revealed such as: Chemical Oxygen Demand, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Ammoniacal Nitrogen and heavy metal Zinc and Chromium. Based on the preliminary environmental monitoring on both landfill sites such as the cover condition and gas emission system, several critical points were addressed in developing an efficient both EMS and EMP for this study sites. One of them is control and treatment of leachate.
