Identification and investigation of a novel anticoagulant associated with fatal equine haemorrhaging
Abstract
In recent times, a significant increase in cases of excessive fatal haemorrhaging in horses has been observed. The Irish Equine Centre, along with CAL Ltd. have been investigating suspected cases and to date have been able to identify a previously unknown anticoagulant activity in the liver of affected individuals. The main aim of this project is to consolidate and review all of the data generated to date by the IEC and to analyse clinical samples for the presence of this anticoagulant substance. Additional testing will be carried out by performing an in vivo animal feeding study. The possibility of the involvement of single nucleotide polymorphisms will be also investigated
