Performance comparison of wireless IPv4 and IPv6 networks

Abstract

Nowadays, Internet is very important for everyone as it acts as information connector in daily life. Having known this, Internet has been growing extremely fast and drastic. So the IPv4 addresses are approaching complete depletion soon and this causes the Internet routing system to be overloaded. These are the reasons that make IPv4 faces many problems. There are three problems that have been brought out in this research. The existing number of IP addresses cannot support the increasing number of users. The IP address is not enough to support so many electronics devices such as PC, laptop, smartphones and many others. There is also no complete comparison between the performance of wireless IPv4 and IPv6 networks. The performance of developed wireless IPv6 network is unknown and not fully implemented since most devices are still using IPv4. Having known these issues, the objective of this research is to analyse and discuss the performance comparison of wireless IPv4 and IPv6 networks by developing the topology. NS-2 software is being used in this research to achieve the objective. The simulation results are tabulated and plotted in graph by using Microsoft Excel. It is shown that wireless IPv6 has better performance compared to wireless IPv4 in term of throughput and packet delay but not in term of packet delivery ratio. IPv6 has use shortest time and more efficiency for transmitting the packets from sender to receiver side. Moreover, IPv6 has quite similar percentage of packet delivery ratio with IPv4. Therefore, IPv6 is proposed to be implemented over the Internet network in the real world as it has better quality services compared to IPv4.
