Effect of mixing parameter on epoxy composites: mechanical and microscopy analysis
Abstract
Effect of mixing speed and mixing time on epoxy/nanoclay composites’ mechanical and morphology properties has been studied in this paper. Fixed amount of nanoclay (3phr) was used to mix by 250 rpm and 500 rpm for 1, 2, 2.5 and 3 hours respectively. Morphology analysis examined the formation of agglomeration on the matrix. Longer mixing time was found to facilitate the dispersion of nanofiller. Phase analysis found only small increment in interlayer spacing of composites. It indicated the intercalation was not occurred effectively. Result of the flexural strength were significantly low. It was believed that the samples posed higher compression strength at the expense of flexural strength thus caused them to be very brittle. The compression strength showed increasing value with increasing speed and mixing time. In conclusion the mixing time and mixing speed help to promote better dispersion and thus enhanced mechanical properties.
