A thermal study on workpiece during turning process
Abstract
During a turning process, heat is generated at the edge of the cutting tool. This
heat is then dissipated through the four systems that make up the process which are the
cutting tool, the workpiece the chip formed and the cutting fluid. This heat, either
generated or dissipated, can be said to determine the efficiency of the machining
process such as the material removal rate. In this project, the study about the effect of
depth of cut and cutting speed that influence the temperature at the workpiece surface.
The experiment was conducted by a turning machine. Then the temperature of the
workpiece surface is measure by using infrared thermograph camera. The workpiece for
the experiment was S45C medium carbon steel. As observed from the conducted
experiment, the results showed that the depth of cut have a significant effect over
temperature on the workpiece surface. Contradictory results were obtained for cutting
speed over temperature. The increase in cutting speed reduced the temperature on the
workpiece surface.
