Investigate of usage of water as a blast mitigator for high impact penetrator
Abstract
This project is about investigating the usage of water as a blast mitigator for high
impact penetrator. The high impact penetrator is an apparatus that uses to accelerate the
projectile at high velocity. The shaped charge concept is used in this project to make sure
the projectile can accelerate at high velocity. The explosive charge that is used in this
project is Emulex. The concept of water consumption is used in high-impact penetration to
ensure it can withstand the pressure of high explosives. Water is placed in the dome section
with a suitable quantity. The relationship between the explosive charges and volume of
water is the important things that need to be identify in this research. The use of water as a
blast mitigator for high impact penetrator, the pressure in the water chamber can be
reduced. In this research, two methods that involved are analytical method and numerical
method. An analytical method, the equation that use is Mie–Grüneisen equation of state
that can be used to calculate the pressure shock at the compressed solid. The Johnson Cook
equation model is used to find the stress developed by explosive on the dome. For the
numerical analysis, the AUTODYN software is the most suitable software that used to
simulate the explosion test. The result is more focus on the pressure of explosion after it hit
the water chamber. The water mitigation concept will show either water can reduce the
explosion pressure.
