Heartbeat monitoring system
Abstract
The Arduino-based heartbeat monitoring system is an application that can be used in
daily life. Instead of sound or Electrocardiogram, Photoplethymography (PPG) technique,
is use. The pulse is detected from the fingertip with a pair of Infrared transmitter and
Infrared receiver. This signal then processed using Arduino Uno R3 to calculate the
heartbeat per minute and displayed on Liquid Crystal Display. Then, SMS alert is send to
mobile phone of medical expert or patient’s family when the heart rate is at abnormal level
by using SIM900 GSM/GPRS Shield. The SMS rate charges follow the types Telco is
using. Besides that, the heartbeat monitoring system is interface with apps that develop
using MIT App Inventor 2 tool for purpose of storing the result of heart rate through HC-06
Bluetooth module. The normal heart rate result is in range 60-100 bpm, out of this range is
consider abnormal. The mean square error getting from the experimental result is 22.1.
However, the misplacement of fingertip will lead to an erroneous result but the SMS alert
will give a patient an early attention from doctor and apps recording will easier the patient
view the previous record.
