Daylighting strategy for interior illumination using fiber optic cable
Abstract
This project discusses about daylighting strategy for interior illumination using fiber optic cable. Artificial lighting is one of the major electrical energy consumption in an office building during the day. Therefore, to improve the situation of electrical consumption should be replaced with a natural lighting. In a tropical country like Malaysia, the potential of solar energy has been used in a wide variety of applications rural and urban areas in which they are growing faster. Daylighting strategy designed to meet the needs and requirements of the building. The scope of this project is to get the illumination level in the test room through fiber optic cables. Three main components that in this study that is solar collector, fiber optic cables and diffuse will be installed inside and outside test room. In this study, there are three parameters to be measured to obtain the data that is lux level, temperature and humidity. These three elements are closely related to each other in the use of fiber optic cable as a medium to transfer the solar energy from a solar collector. From the result obtained in this study, the fiber optic cable is suitable for interior illumination use because the brightness is up to 470 lux. This is because the brightness is reached the Malaysia’s guidelines for energy efficiency in building, there are recommend that the interior lighting for offices use should be between 200 lux to 500 lux. As a conclusion, fiber optic cable is suitable for daylighting system depends on the weather and sky conditions.
