Screening and optimization of oil seed extraction using Soxhlet method
Abstract
This project mainly focuses on the screening and optimization of extraction oil from Jatropha curcas seeds using Soxhlet method. Soxhlet extraction methods was the most efficient extraction method, which provided the best extraction yield. Three parameters were chosen which are ratio of solid to solvent, extraction time and temperature; those are the important parameters that will affect the extraction yield. Suitable solvents must be chosen to conduct the extraction experiments. Oil from Jatropha seeds are non-polar, hence hexane was used as non-polar solvents are required in order to provide the maximize extraction production. Optimization of seed oil extraction was conducted using Design of Experiment Software, in order to determine maximum production with three different variable parameters. Total of 20 runs experiment was conducted with 6 center point. The results showed that optimum condition of extraction is achieved at oil/solvent ratio of 1:6.68, time of 8.5hr & temperature of 69.88oC that able to produce 19.5683 g which around 65.5 % of the extraction yield. The result was verified by equation given and proven that the accuracy between the actual and calculated value was proven.
