This paper focuses on the experimental studies on the development of low cost seismic base isolation pads using scrap automobile tire pads (STP). The mechanical properties of STP specimens are made from different tire brands and with different number of layers are evaluated experimentally. The tests are conducted using Universal Testing machine in axial compression tests. The results of these STP tests are compared among themselves and against a commercially available laminated rubber bearing specimen that has been done in the literature review. STPs are prepared by placing 60mm x 60 mm cut tread sections layers of car tires on top each other. Test results have shown that the strength and stiffness can be improved by simply increased the number of layer in the fabricating process of Scrap tire Pads (STP). Although STP application does not result the strength properties as rubber commercial bearing, it has advantages such as low technology low cost pad, weight reduction, ease of handling, and environmental benefits by recycling scrap tires.en_US
