Air-conditioning and mechanical
ventilating system (ACMV) and lighting system
consume the most electrical energy in Malaysia.
In University Malaysia Pahang (UMP), the
appliances are sometimes switched on with no
occupants and contribute to energy wastage. This
paper presents the development of GUI based
smart control system for energy saving
applications. In our previous research, the data on
case study of energy wastage occurrences in a
UMP Lecture Hall 13 has been presented. Lecture
Hall 13 is often left with lights and airconditioning
switched on with no occupants,
teaching and learning activities in the class.
Therefore a smart design of control system for airconditioning
and lighting system is developed to
prevent energy wasting. The system is designed to
automatically switched off and manually switched
on the power supply for air-conditioners and
lighting units at pre-defined times or when no user
in the room. A graphical user interface (GUI) is
designed for setting the control system and
switching on and off the appliances manually by
using the computer. Our system has been tested
and it can be achieved up to 35% electricity
energy savings after been implemented in UMP’s
lecture halls.
