A new improvement of fishing reel
design is introduced by implementing Design
for Assembly method. The main product is
Alvey Side Cast Reel 500A5 which is one of
the current fishing reel models. This product
utilized simple mechanical movement and
interaction. Hence, there is lot of parts than can
be improve in term of functionality and
assembly. The analysis is based on Boothroyd
Dewhurst method by using Design for
Assembly 9th edition software. Analysis started
by analyzing current product design efficiency
which is generated from the software.
Components that have a major influence in
assembly time are identified for elimination or
redesign process. At the same time, product
functionality must be maintained to assure it
can be operated as the original design. New
components designs being proposed for DFA
analysis that aimed to achieve less assembly
time. Both data from original and new design
are compared to identify percentage of
improvement in term of assembly time and cost.
The end result can lead fishing reel
manufactures to produce more simple design at
low cost to meet customer demand.
