Transmitted HF radio wave is
reflected back to earth by free electrons in the
ionospheric layer. Thus these bands of frequencies
which are from 3 to 30 MHz can be utilized for
voice and data communication. Despite the
unpredictability and propagation problems faced
by HF radio communication, it still has many
benefits such as the system is low-cost, requires
minimum equipments and easy to set up. The
purpose of this paper is to present the research
work on establising a HF radio communication
station in Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). The
HF communication is intended for voice and data
communication. It is equipped with Automatic
link Establishment (ALE) capability to enhance
the system’s reliability and performance.
Equipments used in this research are HF radio, PC
and HF modem. Field testing is conducted
between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)
Skudai and UMP to verify the performance of the
system.
