A general approach for measuring crowd movement
Abstract
Detecting the movement of crowd is
one of an important task in monitoring crowd. The
movement of crowd can be used to understand the
behaviour of the crowd and this can help any
surveillance application to maintain the safety
environment for crowd, especially in a public
area. There are two ways to measure the
movement such as using shape- based or motionbased
techniques. This is because when there are
changes in the object’s movement, human
effectively perceive the object’s shape and
motion. Nevertheless, using the shape-based
technique is preferred since both moving and
stationary pedestrians can be recognized. In this
paper, a general way on measuring the movement
is proposed. A new definition of crowd
movement patterns which are no movement, nonrandom
movement and random movement is
introduced. The shape-based technique utilizing
invariant moments will be explored for detecting
the movement of crowd.
