Optimization of resistance spot welding process parameter on Galvanised steel by using Taguchi Method
Abstract
In this experimental study, three resistance spot welding parameters were varied on galvanized steel to determine the optimum value of parameters by using the Taguchi method of analysis. Selected parameters are welding current , welding time and holding time. All the three of these parameters consist of three levels. There are four steps in the Taguchi method of analysis, namely the selection of suitable Orthogonal Array (OA), calculation of S / N ratio, statistical analysis using ANOVA and Confirmation Test. The type of OA used in this study was L9.Tensile tests and hardness tests were conducted on the sample. Results from these tests were used to calculate the S / N ratio, ANOVA and Confirmation Test by using formulas. From this Taguchi method the optimal parameters value and percentage of contributions of factors to the welding can be identified in order to produce high quality weld joints. The results shows that the optimum value of parameters for tensile strength analysed by using Taguchi method are welding current of 5 kA, welding time of 10 seconds and holding time of 10 seconds and the optimum value of parameters for the hardness are welding current of 4 kA, welding time of 5 seconds and holding time of 5 seconds.
