Development of mobile application to assist blind users based on android system
Abstract
Nowadays, the technology becomes advance from day by day especially for the
android system that now can be implemented to many of the system such as barcode reader system. While there are many barcode readers available for identifying products in a supermarket or at home by using mobile phones camera. Most camera-based systems for finding and reading barcodes are designed to be used by sighted users such as the Red Laser iPhone application and assume the user need to carefully center the barcode in the image before the barcode is read. Blind individuals could benefit greatly from such systems to identify goods packaged such as canned goods in a supermarket but unfortunately in their current form these systems are completely inaccessible because of their reliance on visual feedback from the user. We will describe a mobile phone application that guides a blind user to the barcode on a package in real-time using the phone’s built-in camera. Once the
barcode is located by the system, the information of the product will be retrieve through the database product, which is then decoded and the corresponding product information will be read aloud using text-to-speech technology.
