Determination of the parameters in designing the drying chamber for Orthosiphon Stamineus
Abstract
Leaf of Orthosiphon stamineus was fermented or extracted with the distilled water
and the extracts were subjected to qualitative and quantitative High Performance Liquid
Chromatography (HPLC) analyses of the polyphenols, the most dominant chemical
constituents in the leaf. An HPLC method was developed for the separation and
determination of Rosmarinic acid (RA) in Orthosiphon stamineus. The separation system
consisted of a C18 reversed-phase column, a gradient elution system of methanol/water
containing orthophosphoric acid, and a photodiode array detector. The extraction with
water extracts at 4 and 8 h gave a high yield of Rosmarinic Acid. There are literature review
said that the concentration of active ingredient in the herbs may be lower than the dried
herbs. The moisture content, drying rate, temperature, air circulation and drying time were
controlled during the drying process since they can affect the drying process and the active
compound in the herbs. Therefore, these parameters will be controlled and used to design
the drying chamber for Orthosiphon stamineus.
