Abstract: This paper discusses the relationship between shear strength and consolidation pressure of tropical peat. One major problem related to construction on peat deposit is the low shear strength of the soil. Understanding the engineering properties and characteristics of peat especially on its shear strength is very important because it will influence the bearing capacity of the soil. The shear strength of the samples was obtained by triaxial compression test under consolidated undrained condition. The results shows a significant relationship between consolidation pressures applied and shear strength obtained in both the sapric and fibric type of peat.
