Abstract: In this paper, the thermal, mechanical and optical properties of mortars mainly composed of coal fly ash and red gypsum are studied with the aim of analyzing the fire resistance and mechanical strength characteristics of mortars potentially used for passive protection against fire. It is believed that the use of fly ash combined together with red gypsum which is the residue in the production of titanium dioxide will produce comparable fire resistance product that can successfully compete with products made from primary materials and at the same time reduce the environmental costs of waste disposal.
