Abstract: In accordance with conservation efforts, this study is focused on improvement in every aspect of engineering field. A very small percentage of coal ash produced worldwide is currently being exploited and the growing concern about pollution and increasing landfill costs. There has been global interest to increase the utilization of coal ash. Benefits for doing so include a reduction in the usage of non-renewable natural resources and the replacement of materials that may be energy intensive to manufactured. The aim of this project is on identifying the geotechnical properties of coal ash mixtures modified with Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). Four samples of modified coal ash mixtures with different ratio of fly ash and bottom ash measured by weight is prepared to undergo several laboratory test. The properties and characteristic of the product were compare to those coal ash mixtures samples that treated with distilled water act as control variables. There are five laboratory test which are Grain Size Analysis, Specific Gravity Determination, pH test, Standard Proctor Compaction Test and Unconfined Compression Test. Generally, after the modification of the coal ash mixtures with the Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), the shear strength and cohesion of the coal ash had increase significantly. Most of the result indicates that the surfactant had improved the properties of coal ash mixtures.
