Abstract: Hydrogen sulfide has known to bring effect to human health. In disposal site, one of the factors that cause emission of hydrogen sulfide is disposal of plasterboard. The sulfate contain in plasterboard is reduced by sulfate reducing bacteria and resulted in hydrogen sulfide production. In order to reduce the adverse effect, biological activities of sulfate reducing bacteria was compressed using hydrated lime. Hydrated lime act as a chemical reagent that increase the pH to which it is not favorable to sulfate reducing bacteria activities. In this project, hydrogen sulfide was cultivated using plasterboard in experimental columns. Two experimental columns were loaded with pretreated plasterboard and one experimental column act as controlled column. The hydrogen sulfide produced from the controlled column able to reach reached the concentration of 90 ppm. The results show that the reduction percentages of hydrogen sulfide reach 24.4% for column using 60 mM hydrated lime and 26.8% for column using 550 mM hydrated lime during week 6 where the hydrogen sulfide reached the peak value. The results show that the reduction effects from hydrated lime diminished with time. The pH of the plasterboard mixture was observed to know the influence of pH to the biological activities of sulfate reducing bacteria. Besides, the sulfate ion dissociated from plasterboard was observed using gravimetric method.
