Abstract: Road embankment was built and compacted by standard proctor compaction. It was expected to gain strength from time to time after constructed. However, there are some cases where the embankment undergoing failure in slope stability. There are some assumptions made for the failure of embankment where water vapor are diffuse into the fill material of the road embankment thru the sand layer below of the road embankment by capillary action. Water ponding at the toe of the embankment might be entering the fill material of the road embankment as well. This project is to investigate the effect of ponding condition toward the shear strength of the soil compacted to the standard proctor. Results in the project will provide a data parameter of the soil shear strength after it was soaked in water tank for certain period. This soil sample will be a model as the part of the road embankment. Engineers in future can design and construct a road embankment with the risk of failure provided in the result of this project. Failure of the road embankment can be clearly shown in the results of a modeling of road embankment in PLAXIS 2D. Settlement of the road embankment can be avoided by using the data parameter provided in this project.
