Oil spills can destroy marine life as well as damaging habitat for land animals and humans. Majority of marine oil spills occurs from ships emptying their tanks before or after entering port. Large area oil spills are mostly from tanker ruptures or collisions with reefs, rocky shoals, or other ships. Some of the spills came from illigal oil emissions. These spills are usually massive in the extent of their environmental damage and generate wide spread media coverage. Routine surveillance of shipping routes and coastal areas is necessary to enforce maritime polluton laws and identify offenders.en_US
