Abstract: The effect of acid and bases treatment on chitin with characterization and thermal properties were studied. In this study, golden snail shells were using as raw material in isolated the crustacean’s chitin using 1 M and of HCl concentration for 1 hours and 1M of NaOH concentration solution for 2 hours, 12 hours and 24 hours respectively. The samples are characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to determine the presence of acetyl and glucosamine in the chitin. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was using to study the structure and morphology of the chitin. In the thermal studies, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) were using to analysis characteristic of decompose pattern. Generally, the acid and bases treatment affected the result of the characterization and thermal properties of the isolated chitin from golden snail shells. In addition, the different duration of NaOH treatment improved the results and has more pure chitin and has better results.
