Abstract: Interest on harmonic problem is increasing due to increment of non linear loads such as televisions, computers, monitors and others. These non linear loads contribute to low power factor (PF) and high total harmonic distortion (THD) which may exceed the IEEE standard. The circuit designed includes a single phase rectifier, a filter capacitor and load. The single phase rectifier will be designed using a certain value of current and the output of the rectifiers which contain harmonics which will be filtered using a capacitor. In this project, we will study the effect of capacitor towards the input harmonics and power factor and also compare the result obtained with the circuit without a capacitor. Simulation will be done using Psim software. A hardware model will also be included in this project where the results will be obtained using the Power analyzer (PM100) and the results between the hardware and software will be compared.
