A study was conducted that aimed to improve the general understanding of the bearing capacity of the soft clay soil commonly found in the area near the beach. This paper summarizes and discusses the properties of soft soils and foundation design low and highrise buildings on soft clay. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of soft clay on the design of the building. Bearing capacity of the soil is a very important factor and should be a concern when designing the building. Error in regard to the properties and characteristic of this land will result in building collapse. Based on this project, a study is conducted to identify land for the studied soil samples to ensure the sample used for research is correct. After identifying the soil is clay, several tests were carried out to find the bearing capacity of the soil samples. After that the design of building frames to find out which will be imposed on the land and followed by design the building foundation. The design of high rise and low rise buildings is done and based on the design with steel reinforcement and type of suitable foundation will be considered. From the study, the characteristic of the soft clay was known to have high moisture content and low bearing capacity. Thus the foundation suitable for the soft clay soil is a pile foundation.en_US
