Abstract: Green building is an integrated framework of design, construction, operations and demolitions practices that encompass the environmental, economic and social impacts of buildings. Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysia’s green rating tools for evaluating environmental design and performance of Malaysia buildings. This study aims to determine the levels of GBI acceptance in construction industry and the barriers of in implementing GBI. This study also compares the difference between green building and traditional houses. Data of this study were collected through questionnaire survey within key players in construction industry in Perlis, Kedah and Penang. The overall study indicates that the most respondents were understand the GBI terms and agreed that GBI is important and beneficial to owner and country but the implementation of GBI is still not to utmost level. Traditional house mostly were built less emphasize about sustainability and only focus on materials. In a nutshell, GBI need to be widely used for upcoming project and it need to be practiced to fill the need of green building century.
