Abstract: Lightning is the occurrence of changes in electricity in the air and produce a large voltage energy .Lightning strikes starts by the movement of light, followed by a loud sound of thunder. This characteristic is important to predict the presence and location of lightning by the lightning detector device. The design of lightning detector and location is based on the effect of visible light that are detected by light dependent resistor sensor and sound sensors. This electronic device used of light sensor, sound sensor, PIC chip, the numerator and the LCD. Three sound sensors circuit mounted on each corner of an equilateral triangle to form the geometry for determining the location of the detected lightning. Lightning detection is carried out by a light detector located in the middle of the triangle. Signal from light detector will start the counter as the simulation to measure the direction and length of time of the lightning sound. The light travels much faster than sound. Thus when the sound has been detected by the detector noise, the signal from the sensor will stop the counter from further counting. PIC chip read the output of all sensor circuits and becomes output to shows a period of time on LCD as an indicator. The sound sensor circuits labelled as T1,T2 and T3 will be an indicator to which direction lightning comes as either of them stop counting. It can be seen on the display. Next the output of LCD can be calculated using computer software to obtain three-dimensional graph which gives the actual location of the lightning. This will provide a more accurate reading of lightning’s distance. Thus, this lightning detector device can give early warning of the present of lightning and the most important, predict the direction and the distance of lightning from the determined place.
