Abstract: For safe journey, the behavior of the driver has to be monitored. Statistics prove that most of the road accidents are due to driver abnormal behavior like drowsiness, inattention and drunk and drive. If a monitoring system which can detect these abnormal behavior in driver is developed, then he/she can be alerted on time which can save precious lives, avoid injuries and economy losses. Researchers have monitored the driver and detected abnormalities using any one of the following measures: (1) vehicle based measures, (2) physiological measures and (3) behavioral measures. Each of the methods has their own list of challenges. In this paper, we try to bring out the challenges in monitoring the driver.
