The 2nd International Malaysia-Ireland Joint Symposium on Engineering, Science and Business 2012 (IMiEJS2012) jointly organized by Universiti Malaysia Perlis and Athlone Institute of Technology in collaboration with The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia, Education Malaysia and Malaysia Postgraduates Student Association Ireland (MyPSI), 18th - 19th June 2012 at Putra World Trade Center (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.en_US
This study was designed to investigate the efficiency of using two coagulants that is natural coagulant represent Moringa Oleifera (MO) and chemical coagulant represent Aluminium Sulfate (ALUM) in Methylene Blue (MB) color removal. In the study of effect of MO extraction method on MB color removal efficiency, it shows that the extraction of MO with NaCl achieve 7 times higher than extraction of MO with distilled water. To assess the optimum concentration of MO for color removal efficiency, the concentration of 4%, 5% and 15% have been studied and results show that 5% MO concentration perform best efficiency. Effect of pH on MO color removal efficiency also covered in this study where from the result, it shows that pH 7 and pH 9 does not change MO coagulation activity in MB. For the chemical coagulant, ALUM selected for the study. Optimum pH for ALUM is determined by considered pH study was pH 7 and pH 9. From the results, pH 9 showed a higher efficiency as compared to pH 7. Having identified the optimum conditions for MO and ALUM in MB color removal, a comparison was made between these two coagulants, where the concentration and pH of selected operations are respectively 5% at pH 9. From the study, the most effective coagulant is MO at 5% concentration compare to ALUM and no pH adjustment needed to control the pH. Besides high efficiency of dye removal, the natural coagulant treatment process offers many advantages for potential application as well as good for environment and health effect.en_US
