Abstract: Smoke detector can be said as one of the fire safety tool. The variety of the smoke detector in the market today helps peoples to choose the better product. A better product is a product that fulfills the customer needs. Although there are many types of smoke detector are invented, the problem for smoke detector to detect the smoke in short time still occurs. To solve this problem, the design of the smoke detector needs to be improved. The smoke detector can be improved in aspect of function, the detection system, housing design and the circuit. In this project, the smoke detector improvement and development is focused on smoke detector’s housing design. This design project is planned by applying the product design process. In the product design process, the design of product is beginning with planning phase follow by the concept development phase, system-level design phase, detail design phase, testing and refinement phase and the last phase is the production Ramp-Up. In this project, as a result, a new design of smoke detector is completed when the prototype of the product is produced and the effectiveness of the new design of smoke detector is successfully tested.
