Abstract: Experimental modal analysis has grown steadily in popularity since the advent of the digital FFT spectrum analyzer in the early 1970’s. Today, impact testing (or bump testing) has become widespread as a fast and economical means of finding the modes of vibration of a machine or structure. This paper will review a technique use to detect cracks in long pipes. Experimental setup are performed by using two different materials; PVC (poly vinyl chloride) and ABS ( Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Stryrene) pipe with the crack to thickness ratio in the range 0.20 m and 0.4 m are investigated. The crack locations are considered 0.20m and 0.40m from the sensor (accelerometer) with 0º angle. The natural frequencies of different pipe crack are detected by accelerometer and recorded with PicoScope instrument. Based on measurement of natural frequencies from vibration the frequencies are found in different value with distinct crack location.
